Transparent Seated Figure on Skye

Region: Wantage – South & Vale

Artform: Glass, Jewellery, Mixed Media, Paper, Sculpture

In thirty-five years of combining metal with glass and stone, Johannes has expanded the boundaries of

expression by fusing the strong and the fragile, the solid and the liquid, the dark and the transparent.

Working with glass he had to accept however that there are limitations in weight and size which could not be surpassed.

In a quarter of a century he then developed slowly the idea to replace glass with space. As with glass light,

clarity and purity started to emanate from his new work

In his ‘Immaterial¹ series, von Stumm has eliminated the shadows to create figures of ultimate transparency,

powerful figures which use the negative space to let light and darkness into increasingly complex and

exciting forms. These works are a logical progression in his continual wish to de-materialise the image in

space.

Inspired by Batsford Arboretum. Oil on canvas board. 40cm x 30cm This is the third painting to emerge from my many visits to Batsford Arboretum. For me it offers such a variety of form, colour and scale at different times of the year. My first effort was a tiny, almost monochrome painting, also featuring the bridge, 15cm x 15cm, which was sold at my first Artweeks show in 2011. The second painting sold at our C21 Art Group’s exhibition at Woodstock Museum last year. Dirk Pretorius OAS
