The work I am showing this year began in the first Coronavirus lockdown of 2020 when I was homebound and only able to travel to my place of work - my studio. I gathered burnt soil from a bonfire that had been made in the woods next to my studio. I am using this, and recently gathered soil, as material for my current work.
I am curating the installation 'Soil' in the Drawing Room of Wilcote Art.
Soil, this complex organic matter we cannot live without, which gives life and accepts our death.
This installation is the fourth in the 'Tree' series of works by Laura Middleton, Nimmi Naidoo, Karen Purple, and Annabel Ralphs.
I am a process-led artist who works with place. The questions, perceptions and reflections that arise through my enquiries become my materials.
By creating each piece from inside to outside I loosen ties to a particular medium. I have created sound-art, installations, text-based works, performance, and socially engaged participatory events.
