Although I enjoy painting still life in my studio my preferred area of work is outdoors in all seasons. I am a plein air painter working directly from the subject. For me the challenge is changing light and the decision whether to work in the morning or afternoon light. I am fascinated by tree structure particularly in winter and I have worked for several years in Blenheim where the trees are so inspiring.
In summer my garden provides inspiration, also the allotments at the end of the lane where sunflowers and dahlias mix with the vegetables and where I am always made welcome by the allotment holders.
At sixteen I studied at Sheffield College of Art before moving to London to the Slade School of Fine Art. There I studied under Sir William Coldstream, Patrick George and a young Lucian Freud. At the time drawing was paramount so for me drawing is fundamental to painting and this is reflected in my work.
I have exhibited widely including the RA Summer show, the Royal West of England Academy, Birmingham Society of Artists and Lynn Painter Stainers in the Mall Gallery. I have had several solo exhibitions in London, Birmingham, Durham and Oxford. My work is held in public collections listed in the Public Catalogue Foundation now Art UK www. artuk.org
I have been a member of Artweeks since the 1990s and have met many interesting people.
