Inspiration
I love to create paintings inspired by the stunning West Oxfordshire countryside where I live and seascapes from my travels. These are usually enhanced by my vivid and creative imagination. Every day I take walks in the beautiful countryside of West Oxfordshire with Lenny my Labrador. The expanse of farmer’s fields and woodlands predominately inspire my work. My favourite views for inspiration are sunlight streaming through trees creating dramatic shadows and flickering light. I am inspired by foliage for foreground interest. These include grasses, ferns, cow parsley, thistles and other seasonal wildflowers. My favourite time of year is when the stunning spring bluebells are in flower. I take photos when I am out and about and when back in the studio, I mainly work from memory using these reference photo as great reminders.
My seascapes are inspired by visits to the coast. Mainly Cornwall, Devon and Wales. I gather reference photos while visiting and use these as a starting point for composition, colour, light and shade. My paintings rarely resemble the original photograph as the application of paint usually takes me on another journey!
My Painting Style
I enjoy the experimental approach of trying out different mediums including, acrylic, oils, ink, watercolour and various textures. The application of the paint is an exciting experience for me, creating interesting marks such as splashes, dripping, masking, dry brush, blending and palette knife effects plus unusual 3D layered paintings. Sometimes I begin with texture or a fluid paint effect to start me on a journey of discovery, not knowing where it may lead!
