Artist information
I am exhibiting in my home studio and garden with Jane Dipple, a long standing friend and accomplished artist.
I discovered a passion for clay after I had given up full time work to stay at home with my young family. While living in Dallas, Texas, I joined a local craft guild and took many classes and workshops in all aspects of pottery making.
For many years I worked with a variety of clays making thrown, glazed functional pots for the kitchen. Having returned to England, with access only to an electric kiln, I decided to change direction and make hand built, unglazed pots for the garden, using a strong clay form that could withstand winter weather. I developed the designs out of a desire to make more sculptural forms. My inspiration comes from the natural world, from rock formations and weathered stone with plants growing in cracks and crevices.
We welcome you to visit us in the studio in the heart of Goring.
Exhibition information
My pots are designed primarily for use in the garden. The organic pod-like forms are made from slabs of stoneware clay, initially laid into hand made moulds and then constructed with soft clay slabs and coils. The surfaces are textured and finished with metal oxides to give a weathered look reminiscent of natural stone. The pots are fired in a kiln to a very high temperature, making them resistant to frost. They are mostly planted with sempervivums, commonly known as houseleeks, which compliment the sculptural nature of the pots and are extremely hardy and easy to maintain.
