I produce decorative and functional pieces, both wheel thrown, and hand built.
I enjoy experimenting with form, pattern, and colour. Currently, I work with distinctive floral designs and bold, bright colour, influenced by the shape and shade of seasonal plants in my garden. I use a technique of paper resist, where hand-cut paper shapes are applied to the pot before glazing. Each piece is individual and I tend not to plan how to decorate a piece until it is in front of me. I like the spontaneity of working out a design to fit the form.
As a long-term visitor to the Dorset and Cornwall coastline, I am drawn to the greens and blues reflected in the landscape, sea, and sky. Trips to India and South Africa have influenced my use of a bold colour palette. Vibrant colours surround you in both countries, in the fabric, spices, and painted buildings to name but a few.
Many years ago, I was lucky enough to study pottery at secondary school and, after a career as a cardiac physiologist, was drawn back to ceramics.
The technical process of manually producing images of the heart using ultrasound can be directly compared to the dexterity and precision used in producing pots.
I enjoy the studio pottery sessions, working alongside other potters is inspiring, sociable and a great learning environment.
