Artist information

TONY THOMSON jewellery designer

When the eminent sculptor, Elizabeth Frink,  has enough confidence in your work to sponsor your first exhibition, you sense that you must be creating something special. The work of jewellery & silversmith designer, Tony Thomson, caught her eye in the sixties. Thanks to her enthusiasm and generosity, Tony was able to purchase the precious metals required to make a jewellery collection which was shown alongside Frink’s pieces at a sell-out exhibition. Since then, Tony has not looked back. Early on, he developed a passion for precious stones after chancing to see them being polished in a small backstreet gem shop; they have lost none of their power to attract and inspire. The shapes and colours of the stones are his starting point; he lets them dictate just how the design will go. His work uses many traditional silver and gold working techniques; cuttlefish casting, fabrication, stone cutting and setting and he enjoys passing on his knowledge to students as well creating his own work either for customers’ commissions or for exhibition.
