389 Tony Thomson

Region: Jericho – City
Artform: Jewellery
Tony Thomson’s traditional jeweller’s workshop will be open alongside an exhibition of his work. So how did Tony become a jeweller & silversmith? His interest in stones began after seeing them being polished in a gem shop. Then, as an art student, his early pieces were admired by the sculptor, Dame Elizabeth Frink, who generously sponsored his first collection which was shown alongside her sculptures at The Thames Gallery, Eton. It was a sell-out exhibition! Tony often begins a piece by choosing a stone, maybe semi-precious, or a fossil or opal, piece of slate, pearls, a diamond or maybe bits of sea glass; these are his starting point and help shape how something develops. Pieces vary from the delicate to the unusual to the individual. Each piece is unique. When making pieces, Tony uses different silver and gold working techniques including cuttlefish casting, fabrication, stone cutting and setting. And, because of the initial encouragement which Tony received, he’s a generous teacher to anyone wishing to develop jewellery making skills, sharing both his workshop, his knowledge and his passion for stones.
