I make two categories of ceramics:
1) Stoneware and porcelain pots fired with wood (pine, oak, chestnut) in an anagama kiln for up to five days (continuously). Sometimes these pots are rugged and elemental, sometimes delicate and smooth, depending on their position in relation to the flame and the embers. They range from shots 2" tall to garden jars 30" tall.
2) Pots glazed with a carbon trap shino and fired in fierce reduction in a gas kiln here in Ewelme. This is a dramatic and variable glaze ranging from amber through charcoal. It is decorated with droplets of sang de boeuf, rose ash glaze and liquid wax. The rims are brushed with gold lustre, just enough to catch the light. These pots range from delicate sake cups to bottles two foot tall.
Most of the pots are thrown on the wheel, some are altered, a few handbuilt with slabs. They are all designed to be used and enjoyed in house and garden.
I also make wild edge bread and charcuterie boards in oak, elm and walnut.
I will be firing the anagama kiln in April and bringing the freshly minted pots straight back from France to Ewelme for Artweeks.
