John Blandy

oak tree- Wytham woods
Region:
Wolvercote & Wytham - City
Artform:
Drawing, Painting, Paper

Commissioned by the Wytham Woods Conservator, Blandy has been following trees in Wytham Woods since 2015 . The veteran trees stand out as individuals: a Hornbeam at Gibson Gate, and a 600 year old Oak on the Eynsham side of Wytham Wood. Currently, a weeping Ash on rough common and a large Beech near the chalet are his focus.

Blandy stands on one spot, pastels to hand; each image, timed and dated, records an experience of the encounter in real time. As series, these images create a longitudinal portrait of the tree as the seasons wheel round.

Along side the Wytham Woods projects, Blandy will be exhibiting pastels from two other long term projects. Following Seacourt Stream, which winds through Wytham village, from a spot with views up and down stream. And a daily record of an apple tree in a garden that began with lockdown in 2020.
