Responding to the ever-changing quality of light and seasons in my garden and local landscapes, I aim to represent the experience of the moment through spontaneous marks and more considered painting. Whether painting landscapes or still-lives I try to reduce the composition to an image that can stand alone without explanation - a composition where the elements such as line and colour are brought to the surface and create their own dialogue. I like the way water-soluble oil paint works on paper, whether in liquid or in drier solutions, and while I make little distinction between painting and drawing it is clear that some of my works are more finished than others. Ultimately, I am striving to create compositions that while balanced have a dynamic energy of their own.
