‘Those who can, do; those who can’t teach’: Man and Superman – George Bernard Shaw 1906
This could well describe me. Back in a former life, I was an art teacher in a comprehensive school where adolescents moaned ‘I’m no good at art Miss’ and the uphill task was to motivate and encourage creative talents. Mostly it was their lack of confidence and the fear of making mistakes. Whilst working I did very little art work bar the quick demo at the beginning of a session. I said I didn’t have time (although there is always time for things you really want to do!). When I stopped working I had no excuse but I found that I too, like my former students, lacked confidence. Joining the local (very friendly) art society and attending a few workshops and being a ‘student’ again has been delightful and I just love the process of painting – predominately in acrylic but also experimenting with watercolours, inks and oils.
I have had the privilege to attend several workshops run by established and accomplished artists. I am very influenced by the work of Hashim Akib who explained that he works with loose, bold, colourful strokes loading several colours in one. He looks primarily for blocks of colour and builds his work from there.
