Exhibiting during Artweeks, with South Oxford Arts at the South Oxford Community Centre, Lake Street, Oxford, OX1 4RP
20th, 21st, 27th, 28th and 29th May, 1 to 6 pm
I have been drawing and painting since I was a child but really only spent time on it once I had retired. I paint mostly in acrylics, enjoying the colour, texture and shapes I can create. I also do pen and wash drawings, in the style of book illustrations.
I have attended the monthly Creative Drawing and Sketchbook classes at the South Oxford Community Centre as they give me a chance to learn more techniques and work alongside other artists. South Oxford Arts has opened up these opportunities which as someone who lives locally, I really appreciate. I have recently become a member of SOA.
This series of paintings were inspired by the dying cordyline in our front garden. Many months after the very cold period in December 2022, the leaves finally started turning brown, drying up and falling off the stems. I was intrigued by the shapes of the dead plants that I could see from my kitchen window. It felt like the end of an era and although I know they are likely to grow again, it had taken 10 years from the last long cold spell for them to regrow fully.
I hope you enjoy my work. Philippa
