Artist information
I am a local artist working in a range of media and formats. These include oil, acrylic, gouache, charcoal and plaster. I enjoy working in three dimensions, painting / drawing and photography. Recording through sketches and photography, I am interested in aspects of both rural and urban environments that often go unnoticed.
Exhibition information
The three distinctive approaches seen in this exhibition reflect my engagement with landscape over time. The first piece titled ‘Air Water Ground’ are based on recollections of a walk to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) following the Pilgrim’s Way in Northumberland. The three-mile walk can only be attempted at low tide. The work features 24 ceramic tiles wrapped in cotton, aiming to depict the changing light and air over land, sea, and sky.
The four gouache paintings were undertaken over a period one day revisiting the site of my childhood. They take in the landscape looking south from the A66 in North Yorkshire. My interest was in trying to capture the ever changing light and active energy of this windswept landscape.
The artworks ‘Ascending’ and ‘Round the Corner’ explore transparency, solidity, and line using charcoal, acrylic, and ink on paper strips. These are then collaged together to form interweaving patterns across the strips. Both pieces link to the fragmentary nature of vision when walking through a landscape. From closely observed ground to gazing upon the uplifted horizon, space often opens up in ways we cannot predict. As a walker this experience is the misjudgement of reaching the summit or the turning round a corner to find the unexpected.
