The feeling of being engulfed in nature both excites and humbles me. Whether it’s battling the elements in torrential rains and high winds or basking in its warmth on a tropical beach. It gives me the same exhilarating feeling. An overwhelming sensory experience of being alive and present.
I love to paint en plein air, to be immersed in the expanse of natural landscapes, absorbed and intoxicated by the richness of colours and textures, which I endeavour to carry through in my painting. In making a painting or drawing I experience the same feelings in both a physical and sensory way as though I am physically present in the landscape. My use of chalk pastel, its tactile quality, its roots from nature's core, is overwhelmingly sensory and gives me that greater connection to Mother Nature in my work.
This collection encompasses a combination of painting and drawing which has as much to do with the subject as my personal reflection of nature. An admiration not only for her enchanting beauty, her ability to stand strong, her resilience and power yet her fragility and flexibility to adapt to changes and circumstances put upon her by others. These qualities and traits are not unfamiliar to me as these are the expectations I feel in my role as a mother.
