I'm a full time artist, living and working in Oxfordshire, and I'm currently focusing on birds as subject matter. Painting birds coincided with moving to the Oxfordshire countryside and spending much more of my time outside. I have been involved in some planting schemes, and whilst working realised that the life of birds has similarities to ours; arguments, fights for territory, pecking order, a love for food! The birds I paint have an anthropomorphic feel, which lend themselves well to large imposing portraits.
I work in acrylic on canvases normally measuring over a metre, creating images that are larger than life. My current work deals with relationships. I like to paint characters who skew the social norms of history. It's liberating to paint the underdog as the aggressor. I also feel it's important to be able to look at my work and see just a bird; there is a narrative, but the work needs to stand up without it and be aesthetically potent.
