Oxfordshire Artweeks’ Festival director is being cast in plaster this week as part of workshops to create life-sized sculptures of athletes that will stand proud at The Ashmolean throughout the May Artweeks festival to celebrate Olympic values alongside dramatic Greek and Roman classical sculpture in the Randolph Gallery.
Esther Browning, an enthusiastic sportswoman, will be covered in cling film and modroc by children working with local artist Francesca Shakespeare at free family workshops in The Ashmolean. The athlete sculptures created, using methods learnt from Madame Tussaud’s, will be gold, silver and bronze and all the children taking part will make their own small winner’s medal to carry away.
The project has been supported by Camp Energy who run children’s activity camps in Summertown and the Merlin Entrainments Group (Madame Tussaud’s).
