Blandy works on site. He has devoted his working life to painting the natural world and his responses to the same subject This challenges him to see things afresh and to find ways to depict them anew and give form in an evolving response over time.
John Blandy has been following iconic trees in Wytham Wood over the last three years, a hornbeam, a 600 year pollarded oak and this year a beech by the Chalet. This follows on from long series on the Seacourt stream in Wytham.
The work is of a moment, matching colour mark and tone to mood, light and movement.
Each subject becomes like an old friend, yet each visit is a fresh meeting. This requires a consistency in the work, so the changes can be seen from painting to painting, as the story evolves.
John Blandy, a graduate of the RCA, has shown widely, particularly at Cassian de Vere Cole and the Francis Kyle Gallery. Series of his work are in the collections of Hammersmith Hospital and St George’s Hospital Tooting.
