Painting

I spread stuff on canvas and then, miraculously – there’s an image that plays on the senses and evokes feelings of time and place. My landscapes are semi-abstract, but then all painting’s abstract in a sense, because an artist’s vision is selective. I select colour, light and energy from a landscape, and describe these elements with my own idiosyncratic motifs. Bigger pieces require expansive gestural marks. Large-scale works give the viewer a more immersive experience and create a strong presence – putting them in an interior needs flair and confidence. I frequently make diptychs and triptychs; this segmentation into multiple images references our tendency to visualise compartmentalised scenes – so accustomed are we these days to seeing and recording experiences as photographic stills. ‘… you can get lost in these paintings … composed of a thousand glances … enthusiastic, spontaneous, bold.’ Daniel Graham, Art Aesthetics Magazine, Sep 2017
