I trained as a painter. My textile practice started with an interest in batik. I then did a six month apprenticeship with batik artist Tulus Warsito in Java Indonesia. I have since experimented with many different textile techniques. My current practice depends mainly on stitch techniques – especially free motion machine stitching on a fabric collage ground.
My practice is also very dependent on my drawing skills. I can spend as much as a year exploring one theme. A recent preoccupation has been the brassica family (cabbages!) I have now moved on – or down – to explore the soil beneath our feet – a deep and many faceted subject! I enjoy and sometimes incorporate printmaking techniques in the whole process.
