Judy’s work is characterised by its layered, tactile quality. She builds up multiple layers of fabric and ‘draws’ onto them using the spontaneous, fluid line of a free machine needle, a method that captures both precision and instinct in a single gesture. Her pieces sit at the intersection of painting and textile, reflecting a lifelong dialogue between her original training as a painter and her deep engagement with the materiality of fabric and thread.

One of Judy’s works is currently on display as part of the Oxford Textile Artists’ “Reflections” exhibition at The Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock, running from 2nd to 31st May 2026. Entry is free.

Artist information

Judy Hammond originally trained as a painter at Hornsey School of Art in the 1960s. A growing fascination with textiles led her to undertake a six-month apprenticeship under Tulus Warsito, a batik artist in Java, Indonesia, an experience that profoundly shaped her practice for many years. She went on to run a successful batik window blind business and designed and marketed her own fabric-covered lamps. Over time she moved from batik into printmaking, and gradually acquired a broad and diverse range of textile skills. She now works as a fine artist, bringing together many of these techniques in her practice.
