Hand-built sculptural vessel in a gypsum-based medium, coloured through natural oxidation of copper and iron

Region: Oxford East – City

Artform: Sculpture

I create hand-built sculptural pieces using a gypsum-based material, developed through my own unique process. I am self-taught, and my practice has evolved through trial and error, experimentation, and discovering what is possible within the material.

Copper and iron powders, along with iron filings, are mixed directly into the gypsum. Once the piece has cured, the metal is oxidised, revealing its natural patina, with each piece developing a bespoke finish through the oxidation process. Final finishes can range from soft mint greens and turquoise tones to deep blues, orange-brown rusts, and dark brown or black.

I have most recently been experimenting with an increasingly distressed look, including the introduction of a vertical crack to create contrast and enhance a weathered, time-worn appearance.
