357 Alice Kwan

St. Kilda, Melbourne An Acrylic painting on Canvas by Alice Kwan Oxford Artist from Hong Kong

Region: Oxford Centre

Artform: Drawing, Painting

Often half in the present and half remembering another place. Over the past decade I have gathered moments from different cities and journeys – a canal boat ride with family, a favourite café corner, an ordinary street that suddenly feels significant.

In the studio these experiences become soft, dreamy landscapes. I begin with something real – a sketch, a photograph, a fragment of a day – and then allow memory to reshape it. Buildings may bend, colours shift and details fall away. My aim is for each painting to feel like the way a place lives inside you, rather than the way it appears on a postcard.

This year I had the opportunity to bring that way of seeing to a wider audience when I appeared on Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year (Series 11). For Artweeks I am presenting a collection of works that move between countries and moments, inviting you to recognise your own sense of home, memory and wanderlust within them.
