Exhibition information
Ruth has always sewed, she remembers making a pair of pink and white pyjamas with her grandmother when she was about 10 years old. As a young mother with 6 children she made most of their clothes but her first baby quilts were made for babies 5 and 6. She started making quilts to sell about 40 years ago selling them at Greenwich market. When choosing fabrics for a quilt she is mainly inspired by colours, and only uses 100% cotton. She loves using recycled fabrics and searches charity shops for suitable items that can be added to her fabric stash, although pure cotton is getting harder to find.
She accepts commissions for quilts and has made many “memory quilts” using fabrics provided by the customer, clothes worn by a loved one.
Artist information
Ruth was born in Australia and came to England in 1960. She lived in London until 2011 when she moved to a village in Oxfordshire where she could have a better garden. The location was chosen due to being half way between where her children and grandchildren were living. She now has 11 grandchildren.
