Exhibition information

Lizzie’s art work is a colourful and fun world of flowers, fungi, bugs, dogs, toys, vintage finds, any subject that catches her eye really but all rendered in her eye-catching print and paper-collage style. She is inspired by a love of illustrated children’s books, her family life, childhood, pets and a desire to escape into a beautiful imagined world. All art work begins as a drawing which is then transferred onto a rubber block. This is carefully carved with a scalpel, lino tools, sometimes the help of a big old magnifying glass for the tiny details. Once carved the block is hand-printed with ink onto a variety of found papers. She is a bit of a magpie and also very rubbish at throwing things away so it is lucky that some of this hoarding comes in handy for materials and inspiration. It is a completely handmade process of cutting and sticking and after a new work is completed, Lizzie is usually a little inky and surrounded by a sea of confetti-like scraps of paper that will later be found almost anywhere but almost certainly stuck to the bottom of a sock.

Artist information

Lizzie currently lives and works in a small village in Oxfordshire, with her husband, daughter and dog. She grew up in North Yorkshire in a home with cats, horses and lots and lots of books. At school she was only really any good at Art and English, Maths and Science were a big struggle and at A Level Art was her absolute favourite. However she chose to study English literature at Edinburgh University and then a PGCE in Primary teaching in Oxford. After working as a teacher for a few years she found her way back to her happy place, making Art (cutting, sticking and scribbling!) and began studying for a BA in Illustration, graduating in 2005. She now creates under the name The Inky Beetle and sells prints and cards of her work on Etsy and loves to take on commissions for original pieces. Lizzie also works as a Play Leader in an after school club where she gets the paint, scissors and glue out as often as possible in the hope the children will also discover how fun and fabulous it is to make an arty mess. This will be Lizzie’s 10th Oxfordshire Art Weeks and this time she will be exhibiting and selling her framed original art, prints and cards alongside a group of 15 fabulous and diverse artists and makers in Adderbury Church.
