I have had my own kiln for about 2 years and still consider myself new to ceramics. I am very much in the process of finding my style, but I am definitely getting closer! My preference is to use hand building techniques and the philosophy of wabi sabi really chimes with me (letting go of our need for perfection and finding contentment in the present moment). I hope that looking at my pieces will tell you that they have been made with my hands and my heart; they will never be perfect or identical.
My main focus is making useful pieces that will bring joy to the every day. A piece of cake eaten from a lovely plate is more delicious; your morning coffee (or tea!) from your favourite mug is a great way to start the day; a small posy of flowers in a pretty vase never fails to bring a smile. My aim is to spread a little joy in the small things. These are items that should be used; not kept in a cabinet for 'best'.
I am also enjoying playing with the more sculptural side of ceramics with my angels, candlesticks and head sculptures. I enjoy working with a lump of clay and seeing where it takes me - it is rarely in the direction that was first intended!
