My exhibition for Kings Sutton Church will be a display of my circus characters and animals with other pieces from my Gallery. I want to show the magical world of theatre from which I draw ideas. I want to demonstrate the inventiveness that can be achieved with a little imagination. The process of making allows exploration allowing new ideas take shape.
The circus characters and animals are being sold as 'How to Make' kits which introduce people to construction and modelling. The instructions encourage the maker to create their own characters and even add new ones to their collection.
These are exciting things to make and suitable for all ages although some young children might enjoy making them with adults.
Anna Steiner makes 3 dimensional objects relating to entertainment. Drawing on her theatre background, objects are made, where travel, movement and mythical stories are the subject. There is Inventiveness and originality in all the pieces which develop during the making process. As I work I might remember a quickly flowing river where the speed and movement element suddenly appear. This is the best bit about making. My pieces should allow the viewer to see beyond to another world. Sometimes I change a piece if I think a notion has changed and the detailing needs another perspective, to embed the intention. I have started using classic embroidery stitches on the linen shapes to emphasise the textile nature. I might change Carousel which started as a wreck underwater but then its title, which emerged after I had finished suggests the circus world and the bobbing movement which, links to the sea - making a circle in ideas.
Another part of my collection are the 'How to make' animal kits. These are pieces that other people can make. The characters are from the world of entertainment and allow the maker to produce their own individual characters.
