I am keen on portrait drawing which anyone can do successfully if they take a few simple measures - ie to measure a bit.
Turning a box shape into a recognisable head is a fascinating process. I normally use pencil and water soluble graphite. Charcoal is of course also highly effective and much easier than pencil to move around.
