I initially got into ceramics as a creative outlet while working in the IT industry. My work in technology is very structured, detail-oriented and stressful at times, and I was looking for a way to balance that with something more tactile and expressive.
Inspired by nature during daily dog walks and drawn to the meditative process of shaping clay, I transformed a section of my garage into a dedicated home studio. My creative process begins with slab rolling and hand-sculpting, where I experiment with textures and finishes, often incorporating recycled glass into glazes for added depth and vibrancy. I’m particularly captivated by the meditative state that emerges during the creative process. Ceramics offers me a way to balance the precision of my IT career with the freedom and organic nature of artistic expression.
I work from my home studio, a dedicated space that I transformed from a section of my garage. It’s where functionality meets creativity, complete with a slab roller, sculpting tools, and my very own kiln.
My academic background is in Art and an Industrial Design graduate from the 1990s. While my career led me into the tech industry, my passion for hands-on creativity never left me. Ceramics became a way to reconnect with that passion, offering a space to create with intention and to experience the meditative rhythm of working with clay. Working with clay offers an outlet for creativity and mindfulness that contrasts beautifully with my demanding role in IT.
Today, I balance my career in IT with my love of clay, continuing to explore the endless possibilities ceramics offer while staying grounded in the joy of creating something by hand.
