Although I enjoy painting still life in my studio, my preferred area of work is outdoors. I am a plein air painter working directly from the subject. For me the challenge is changing light and the decision whether to work in the morning or afternoon light. I am fascinated by tree structure particularly in winter and I have worked in Blenheim where the trees are so inspiring.
In summer my garden provides inspiration, also the allotments at the end of the lane where sunflowers and dahlias mix with the vegetables and where I am always made welcome by the allotment holders.
At sixteen I studied at Sheffield College of Art before moving to London to the Slade School of Fine Art. There I studied under Sir William Coldstream, Patrick George and a young Lucien Freud, which might show my age, but where I was privileged to learn that drawing is paramount and fundamental to painting.
