Although I enjoy painting still life in my studio my preferred area of work is outdoors. I am a plein air painter working directly from the subject. For me the challenge is changing light and the decision whether to work in the morning or afternoon light. I am fascinated by tree structure particularly in the winter and I have worked for several years in Blenheim where the trees are so inspiring.
In summer my garden provides inspiration, also the allotments at the end of the lane where sunflowers and dahlias mix with the vegetables and I'm always made welcome by the allotment holders.
At sixteen I studied at Sheffield College of Art before moving to London to the Slade School of Fine Art studying under William Coldstream, Patrick George and a young Lucien Freud. At that time teaching drawing was paramount so for me drawing is fundamental to painting and this is reflected in my work.
