Kashmira and Yelena are teaming together this year at Langdale Hall in Witney to exhibit ''Clay and Textiles''.
Sculptural Ceramics by Kashmira - I love to work with my hands - infusing life and strength into the ceramics I create. My forms abound with strength and energy, and organically goes with the 'flow' - as I like to play with the clay and let it take form with shapes and textures as I go along. My creations stem from a single idea in mind, in a process that is not methodical, led by the heart and feelings. Aiming to be imperfectly perfect, with rough and smooth textures, my works are tactile, symbolic, and intriguing to the viewer. My sculptures tend be linear, feminine with sense of flow and energy in them. My inspiration also comes from the Japanese philosophy of ‘wabi-sabi’ ‘ imperfectly perfect’. I handle every process myself, interacting with clay till the piece is complete. The process of creating by hand is what flows within me. I have recently started Sculptural Ceramics Workshops, and will be holding some at the Venue during the Artweeks and thereafter at my Studio in Headington. Please follow my profile page for more details.
Yelena Byra - “I like fabrics and colours. Modern fabric designers are amazing. For this exhibition I’ve made everything of African style cotton fabrics. These fabrics display rich variety of dynamic patterns and vibrant colours which are eye-catching and attractive. Their designs reflect both modern influences and historical references.
I am doing patchwork and quilting for many years. I’ve started as self-taught quilter. Then I did many courses and workshops to improve my technique and meet like-minded people. Before the pandemic I was a member of 2 patchwork groups in Oxfordshire. I don’t use somebody’s patterns for my works, but I’ve got a big library of patchwork books and journals for inspiration. I am working in modern and classic patchwork and quilting style. Most of my works made on a sewing machine, but I like hand-sewing for its therapeutic effect. This is my first exhibition.
I’d like to show wall hangings and smaller creations for everyday life (like table runners, pot holders, cushion covers, glass cases, bags and boxes). Patterns are unique and mine. All my items are for sale.
I’d like more people to be doing and enjoying this craft. That is why I’ve prepared some pre-cut African fabrics (charm packs, fat quarters) and I will be doing demonstrations at the Venue during the Art Weeks.”
