After graduating from The Royal College of Art & teaching at Wycombe Abbey School I have been a full time artist in Thame, Oxfordshire for over 10 years. I am inspired by coasts & local landscapes to produce work for open studio events, local galleries & commissions.
I have always been drawn to water and its reflective qualities, from the River Thames to the West Coast of Ireland. My aspirations when I begin a piece are to evoke a sense of place, I begin by immersing myself in an environment & If possible I will paint ‘en plein air’ to capture a really spontaneous and direct feeling. I often revisit these places at different times of year to see how the changing seasons have affected the ephemeral quality of light, the colours & textures. I work with oil paints as they have an intense pigmentation which gives a fantastic sense of depth, moving from translucent to opaque with an application of pressure. I experiment with mark making possibilities using a variety of palette knives & I am also interested in creating a surface which has different qualities when viewed close to & from a distance so the paintings are never static.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me to arrange a viewing of recent work or to discuss a commission at any time.
