Janie moved to Oxford in December 2020. House renovations started with the building of a studio - a sanctuary in such a strange time. After years of moving home, Janie finally feels settled enough to want to show her work again and, living in the same town as her daughter, they decided to show together.
Janie's recent work has been inspired by her daily walks around Oxford - her drawings, paintings and ceramics have a watery theme. Her creative thoughts have been dominated by water for some time: from her 2009 series 'Flight' (prompted by the plight of refugees fleeing from drought and famine) to her exploration of the course of the Thames, a fascination with water towers and now, observing the every day changes of river life in Oxford.
Francesca, Janie's daughter, makes bespoke jewellery and clothing using recycled, found and organic materials. Her work is inspired by her surrounding environment - both natural and built - and the everyday interactions that occur within it. The red kites circling the meadow, boats along the canal and characters that wander Walton Street all inform the one-off objects she creates. She dreams of all the friends and strangers she meets along the way wearing something she has made.
