337 Gordon Stokes

Region: Oxford South – City
Artform: Photography
My work is a mix of seascapes from the Isles of Scilly, West Cornwall, the Outer Hebrides and elsewhere, and landscapes of Oxfordshire and elsewhere. My inspiration has come from the colour and light of land, sea and sky, but the composition and style has been influenced by impressionist and abstracted paintings much more than by other photography. The images are simple in composition but convey the feeling of the place they were taken, often by framing multiple prints together. They aim to show the calming beauty of the natural world and the great outdoors. I have exhibited widely including at the Hexagon in Reading, West Ox Arts in Bampton, and more locally at the Churchill, Nuffield and John Radcliffe Hospitals. I have lived and worked in the Oxford area for 35 years, but love nothing better than to escape to the quiet coasts and beaches of the far West.
I have been taking and printing photographs since I was 13. I now use digital photography but have used monochrome, colour print and slide film.
