Gordon Stokes has been taking and printing landscape photographs since he was 13. His current work is mainly minimalist seascapes concentrating on the colours and textures of the sea and sky.
For Artweeks 2022 most work is from the Isles of Scilly, Tiree and Coll, the Outer Hebrides and Cornwall, with a smattering of North Norfolk.
His inspiration has always come directly from colour and light, but the composition and style has always been influenced by impressionist and abstracted paintings rather than other photography. The images are simple in composition but convey the feeling of the place they were taken, often by framing multiple prints together. They all aim to show the beauty of the natural world and the great outdoors.
He has combined photography with a career in research, including working for the Countryside Agency. He is currently a research associate with the University of Oxford.
