Oxford Trees: field sketches in charcoal and chalk from Oxford's parks, meadows & woods in the Parks Cricket Pavilion.

My field sketches in charcoal, pencil and chalk are light, instinctive responses to the natural world and reflect my background as a biologist and natural historian.

Working outside in all weathers and at all times of day, my drawings aim to celebrate the beauty, individuality and resilience of the trees around us and to capture the changing light and mood across the seasons.

The drawings displayed for Artweeks will once again include field sketches from The University Parks, Christchurch Meadow, Port Meadow, Wytham Woods and other locations close to the city. Many of my drawings are relatively swift, opportunistic sketches, which aim to capture the feeling of being in the landscape. Others are more closely observed drawings of well known trees, sometimes featuring the same specimen in different seasons. All reflect my essential drawing practice which is based on close observation and daily sketching in the field.

I am privileged to be able to display these works in situ in the beautiful Victorian Cricket Pavilion at the heart of the University Parks - from the doorway of which many of the trees featuring in my drawings are visible. Original oak-framed drawings, limited edition prints, postcards and hand drawn maps of the University Parks are available. Sketchbooks of recent drawings will also on display which often form a starting point for conversations about local trees as well as for discussion about commissions or future projects.

Home-made refreshments (proceeds to charity) and sketching materials are also available for those who want to spend a little longer at this beautiful venue. Access on foot only with steps into venue. No dogs inside please.
