Movement, energy, cycles and rhythms are inherent in our human experience on this living, breathing planet.
I have been aware of elements of the physical world, since I was a child. Sunrises, sunsets, seasons, weather, changes in colour, temperature, smell and light, have captivated my curiosity and sense of wonder for as long as I can remember.
These have appeared in my work in a more explicit way over the last couple of years as I have delved deeper into what exactly it is I love about the natural world.
I have discovered a fascination for the rotations and cycles of the earth around the sun and their connection with time and seasons. Decay and renewal also appear as themes in my work as I record the landscape, often working outside. The movement of waves and clouds have been a source of inspiration from when I first started painting in oils at art college.
My work is a result of observations both conscious and subconscious over years. They include colours of sunsets, light in the sky and patterns and lines made by waves as they sweep across the sand and back out again, marking time, beautiful in their transience.
My process involves drawing in the landscape and at the coast, recording colours, light, movement and atmosphere. I often use pastels so I can record colour and movement simultaneously. Each drawing might have layers and layers of the marks left by waves on the sand, the movement of clouds or leaves in the wind. These marks and colours become the starting point for larger paintings in oil or acrylic which take on meanings of their own but remain anchored to the idea of natural spaces. Memories of places I have been to which have made an impression on me sometimes come to the surface and surprise me. Childhood landmarks or impressions of woodland spaces I may have pic-nicked in with my family re appear through the painting process. I often have areas of light in my work with a feeling of hope attached.
My work allows the viewer to visit places in their imagination or memory and also act as a reminder that we are deeply connected with the natural world.
