Exhibition information

I grew up close to Pendle Hill and the Trough of Bowland, with their rugged moorlands, iron-red streams and black black soil, pitted with close-cropped bog plants. I find satisfaction in trying to recreate that sodden texture – decay even – in my work. I am particularly drawn to the earthy tones and textures achieved with raku and smoke firing and the combinations of materials such as wood and copper with clay. Conversely I also enjoy introducing vivid pops of colour as contrast. All my work is hand-built rather than thrown as this gives me the freedom to develop bulbous organic shapes as I build. I love the sculptural aspect of handbuilding – it is my favourite part of the process where I can push limits to achieve an envisaged form.

Artist information

I am a research biologist who worked to understand the genetic basis of cancers and inherited disease from the 70s to my retirement in 2020. About twenty-five years ago I began evening classes at Sunningwell School of Art, at first with a life sculpture class and later with general ceramics with Oxfordshire Arts. Since then, I have slowly been acquiring bits of kit so that I now has a studio at home with kilns for standard glazing and for raku work.
