Exhibition information
Working in my studio at the bottom of my garden I produce linocut prints inspired by nature and Oxford scenes. My work is is often inspired by the natural world, but also the places where people meet the environment, a rowing boat cutting across the surface of the water or swimmers at Oxford’s Hinksey Pool. I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to urban architecture, particularly 20th Century buildings, such as St Catherine’s College, Somerville College’s Margery Fry building, and Cowley Library.
Artist information
I’ve been a printmaker for coming up to ten years now. Most people seem to have had a go at printmaking at school, but despite studying art to A Level I never did. I can’t remember where or when I came across linocut printing but I was sufficiently intrigued to look up tutorials on YouTube and have a go myself! That’s one of the great things about linocut, that for very little outlay you can get some beginner’s kit together and make your first prints at your dinner table. Suffice to say, I was hooked and at the start of 2021 I left my job in communications to become a full-time artist. My work hours are divided between that precious creative studio time, marketing my art, running workshops, selling at art/craft markets, and of course all the very dull admin stuff that every self-employed person has to do.
There are elements of my old work life that I miss, such as being part of a team (and having a regular, predictable income!) but the ability to spend a fair bit of my time just creating brand new things is still a thrill. And I’ve met a lot of amazing, supportive people on my journey so far; Oxford is a great place to be an artist.
