Exhibition information

In creating lacquer art works, I reflected my culture and heritage while applying the lacquer painting techniques to connect Vietnam and Burma. Some of my lacquer works are inspired by my years in Middle Eastern countries. My interest in painting portraits since childhood has led me to create a lot of portraits over the years, and last year, I completed a collection of portraits of my high school friends (14 of them) in my favourite medium, water colour. I also like doing animal portraits because I am fascinated by their forms, habitat, nature and behaviour. I paint still life paintings of flowers and everyday objects as well. It’s very interesting to study the light and shades, different forms, natural colours and make simple subject turns to vibrant piece of art.

Artist information

I am originally from Burma and I work with watercolour, acrylic, oil and lacquer paints. Over the past 20 years, I have moved to different countries and created paintings that reflect my unique experiences of people and cultures. I studied lacquer painting in Vietnam and I want to introduce this beautiful art form to Oxfordshire, my current home, together with my other portraits from Burma, India and East Asia. Since I moved to the UK, I have started painting landscapes and seascapes in oil. I draw sketches and paint beach scenes during holiday trips. I love doing ink sketches during my travels, as they make it quick and easy to capture moments, people and surroundings, often from my seat in a cafe or a restaurant or while sitting at the beach or climbing up the mountain. I like that kind of spontaneity to choose the subject quickly and draw quickly before the food comes or it’s time to move.
