Exhibition information

Most of my early stuff was sketches and watercolours (paint and pencil). I went through a phase of making fimo clay jewellery, which I sold with a few watercolour prints at a couple of early craft fairs before things got busy. Over the years I have also dabbled with oils, acrylics and clay, upcycled and painted the occasional piece of furniture. and created a few wall murals and themed bedrooms. All for personal enjoyment. More recently, I have collaborated with my husband Philip in designing and making furniture and wood products for the home and garden – just for ourselves, family, and friends. But we are now selling our work through craft fairs and events, gift shops, and our website. We are enjoying making solid wood items, solid wood/resin items, solid multi-wood items, and custom made bespoke items.

Artist information

Hi, I’m Nicky Kahl. Along with my husband Phil, we have run a busy construction business for nearly 4 decades. We are both a bit obsessed with fixing and improving stuff – there’s nothing like walking into a dump and transforming it! But for me, the love of creating artwork was there first. So, I have always sketched, painted, made things whenever I got the time. Having two children along the way made life more busy, but it was even more fun creating art with them and sharing their enthusiasm. They both have a good mix of practical and creative, and are using that well as adults. Over the years, we have had all sorts of left-over materials brought home from jobs, which we re-used and upcycled whenever possible. When lockdown happened we couldn’t work. So I asked Philip to make some garden furniture from some decking, roof joists and slate patio slabs. Best garden furniture we’ve ever had! And so our collaboration with woodwork began! Philip will never call himself an artist. But he is a very accomplished craftsman. He wanted to try mixing coloured resin with wood, so we designed a few things and now have a nice range of items on our website. We are designing and making new things all the time – and I will be bringing the fimo clay back into the designs soon too. Thankfully, the kids kindly set us up with all the techy stuff – the website and instagram. So – more creations to come.
