Exhibition information
Although I enjoy painting still life in my studio in the winter, my preferred place of work is outdoors. I am a plein air painter working directly from the subject. For me the challenge outdoors is the changing light and decision to work in the morning or afternoon light. The paintings of Shifford Church reflect decisions based on light which in Spring 2025 was wonderfully consistent. Church architecture is very challenging both internally when I was working in Fairford Church and externally at Shifford where the perspective of the bell tower proved most challenging.
In summer my garden provides inspiration and here my work is determined by light, colour and shape in that order of priority. The allotments at the end of the lane, where sunflowers and dahlias mix with the vegetables, and where I am always made welcome by the gardeners, is also a good source of ideas.
Artist information
At sixteen I studied at Sheffield College of Art before moving to London to the Slade School of Fine Art. Here I studied under the famous Euston Road painters: Sir William Coldstream, Claude Rogers and Patrick George. This was a time when drawing was considered and taught as paramount to painting. This remains fundamental to my work.
I have exhibited widely including the RA Summer Show, The Royal West of England Academy, Birmingham Society of Artists and the Mall Gallery and Garden Museum in London. I have had several solo exhibitions in London, Birmingham, Durham and Oxford. My work held in public collections is listed in the Public Catalogue Foundation now ArtUK www.artuk.org
I have been member of Artweeks since the 1990s and over the years have met many interesting people. I look forward to seeing you this year.
