Exhibition information
My work is expressive, sometimes abstract, interpretations of the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside. I also enjoy working with seascapes and am influenced by the Pembrokeshire coastline and Cornwall.
I’m interested in conveying a sense of the history of a place. I use multiple layers of paint, collage, stencil work and texture to create depth on the surface. I then scrape through, or ‘excavate’ these layers, metaphorically digging through them to reveal sections of earlier layers echoing the idea of history leaving its mark on the landscape. In addition, as I paint, I’m trying to express the sensation of being in the place noticing the full range of senses: sounds, smells, sights, movement, along with the feelings the place inspires.
When possible, I paint outside as much as I can. Back in my small studio, I aim to have an experimental approach. This includes using found objects for mark making, or taking rubbings from the place, and always, constantly referring back to my original messy sketches.
