Artist information
I was raised in the North Yorkshire Dales, and trained in Art at York, then studied and worked in design before attending the The Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. where i studied Portraiture and life painting at Post Graduate level. After running a portrait and teaching practice in London for some years, i turned increasingly to Landscape and Equine painting after moving to Oxfordshire in 2008.
History of Art and particularly Modern British painting is a passion of mine. I trained at Christies Education in London. And find the combination of a practical and academic art education background invaluable to my teaching practice.
Here at the cottage studio, alongside painting, i run a teaching/ art mentoring practice. Providing One to One drawing and painting tuition to those wishing to either begin from scratch, or elevate existing skills. I teach one day workshops from time to time and small group tutorials may be arranged at different locations. All tuition details can be found on my website. www.melaniewrightartist.co.uk
My paintings have been frequently exhibited in London, and other galleries in the UK and feature in private collections in the UK, USA, New Zealand, Europe and Scandinavia.
I have enjoyed Artist in Residence placements at Charlie Longsdon Racing, Oxfordshire and at the BRS and flat racing scene in Newmarket.
Exhibition information
I paint in a representational, expressive style. Subjects that continually inspire me are Landscape, Nature , Floral and Equine.
My landscape pieces are developed from a constant practice of sketching and painting, small scale, en plein air. Connecting with nature, through close observation, walking and note taking. Working directly from the subject. Sometimes I develop larger scale paintings back in the studio. It is the atmosphere, seasonal tones and colours, the fall of light which fascinates me. I stray from the strictly topographical, finding interest in the loosely handled mark making potential and surface interest of the media, together with key elements drawn from the subject. Horses may feature in my landscape paintings….simply wandering through, roaming, grazing, at ease. I enjoy the figurative element they bring, and their relationship to the environment.
In contrast, I find the Dynamic Equine movement, to be seen at racetracks, training yard gallops, and polo grounds, fertile sketching material with exciting compositions to explore.
At this open studio event there will be a wide selection of framed and unframed artwork and working sketchbooks on display.
