Artist information
I have drawn, painted and ‘made’ all my life but my educational path did not include art, as it was overshadowed by more academic and scientific subjects. After studying for a degree in Chemistry it was while raising my two children that I seized the opportunity to further develop artistic skills. I began my studies at the Open College of the Arts, followed by an Access to Art and Design course at North Oxfordshire School of Art in Banbury. I then pursued a Fine Art degree at De Montfort University as a mature student, graduating with First Class Honours in 2002.
Since then, I have continuously refined my painting practice, working at Commercial Square Studios in High Wycombe from 2015-18 and since 2019, I have been creating in my new studio located in the charming village of Turville in the Chilterns. I am also a proud member the Oxford Art Society.
My work has been exhibited and sold widely, nationally & internationally, and notably I was selected for the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition on 7 occasions, (winning the ING Staff Purchase Prize in 2014), and for the RA Summer Exhibition three years running 2023-25.
In June ‘25 I was thrilled to be featured in the BBC coverage of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. A crew came and filmed me at my studio and then I was interviewed live by Nick Grimshaw on The One Show from the Royal Academy of Arts, when I first saw my painting of a crumpled yellow duster, “Done and Dusted”, hung in the Exhibition.
I have been based in Oxfordshire for 40 years and currently work from my studio in the village of Turville in the Chiltern Hills, which isn’t far from our exhibition venue.
Exhibition information
I am excited to be taking part in Oxfordshire Artweeks again in 2026! This year I am exhibiting as part of a group of five varied artists in a stunning thatched barn which is attached to the 15th century Crown Inn in Pishill near Stonor. There will be three very different painters, myself, Jackie Hughes and Marnie Watson, alongside Jane White and her ceramics, and Rachel Wallace with her mixed media photography.
My work is contemporary realism in oils, grounded in traditional painting techniques and supported by meticulous observational drawing. I love to work in a representational style to try and capture the essence of my subjects, while preserving the tactile quality of oil paint on a flat surface, and I am particularly known for my still life compositions; portraits of everyday items in thoughtful, often whimsical, tableaus to evoke a sense of life, past or present. My chosen subjects are often from the domestic environment, including simple bunches of flowers from my garden and I’m thrilled to be exhibiting a collection in the setting of an ancient barn.
The Crown Inn will be reopening this spring after a long closure and refreshments will be available at the Inn during their opening times
