Lavinia Gallie’s watercolour drawings contrast the precision of geometry with the unpredictability of watercolour. The paper is prepared with several layers of a ground colour, over which is drawn a visible grid, into which shapes and wider lines are then painted. At this stage there is no more forward planning and the paint is allowed to take over.
Inspiration comes from a wide variety of sources: folk art, ceramics, mandalas, garden plans, musical forms.
The hope is that something as simple as a pattern can hold some poetic meaning.
