Jo Wright – portfolio

Finding any scrap of space when inspiration hits.

Jo Wright: Ulysses: capturing a bold, dynamic energy with expressive strokes & vibrant colours. This painting has been a valuable lesson in understanding my worth as an artist.Jo Wright: Faithless: a pensive fusion of deep blues and vibrant greens. A subtle group of wisps form a figure, evoking the mystery of the ocean or an ethereal dreamscape.Jo Wright: Raspberry: like the burst of flavour from a ripe raspberry, this piece is rich, intense, and full of life, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in its dynamic energy.Jo Wright: Bee Series 3: Set against a weathered blue, white & silvery background, the scene features wildflowers with tattered petals swaying gently as abstract bees dance, a reminder of the beauty in small, fleeting interactions that sustain life.Jo Wright: This Too Shall Pass: a deeply personal piece about fragility. It’s a moment of melancholy which we know from experience will eventually pass.Jo Wright: Nocturnes: ethereal, floral-like flecks pirouette in gentle shafts of light, evocative of Chopin's melodies.Jo Wright: Ursula: the ambiguity of form, with bold blues and organic shapes, adds a sense of mystery, allowing the viewer to drift between landscapes, creatures, and the unknown depths of the ocean.Jo Wright: Otto: always masking, blending into his surroundings, while his many arms reflect multiple thought streams and sensory experiences happening at once.Jo Wright: Regency: blends elegance with raw emotion. Soft blush tones contrast with deep, regal blues, creating a sense of refinement disrupted by streaks of white and passionate reds.Jo Wright: Window Pain: densely textured blues. Subtly hidden within the abstract layers, a faint silhouette emerges, an enigmatic face peering through the glass, lost in thought.Jo Wright: Leviathan’s Witness exists where vast waves swirl in the endless blue. Above the sea bed an unblinking eye looks on while an ancient sea creature like figure accelerates through the scene, escaping the abyss while those around him flee. In the depths of the ocean he watches, remembers, & waits.Jo Wright: This is the first bee I painted. The canvas had become overworked & I felt stuck. I chose yellow - unusual for me, as the dominant colour, because it is complimented by the blue underpainting. Suddenly, adding a glow like sunlight filtering through the hints of blue & green from the background, the piece became a thriving hive, with thick, dripping textures of honey cascading over everything. I knew there had to be a lone bee busy at work, collecting the golden nectar for me. This feels rich & indulgent, capturing the essence of nature’s sweet, rhythmic labor, the endless dance of pollination, abundance, & life.
