Dirk Pretorius OAS – portfolio

Dirk Pretorius OAS: 'Ominous Africa' - This painting captures two features of Southern African landscape that are dear to me - unique rock outcrops and cloud formations that embody both promise and threat simultaneously.Dirk Pretorius OAS: 'Middle Earth II'. An imaginary scene capturing the mystery and allure of a secret valley somewhere out there, waiting to be explored.Dirk Pretorius OAS: 'Approaching storm'Dirk Pretorius OAS: 'Cherwell Valley Winter' - a painting inspired by many walks near Deddington in the Cherwell Valley on a cold wet day. At first glance, grey predominates, but deeper down is a richness of colour, waiting to be discovered.Dirk Pretorius OAS: 'Sanctuary'. Inspired by many visits to Christmas Common, ChilternsDirk Pretorius OAS: 'Barford Pastoral'. This is a view I often see on my cycle route, from Hempton looking towards Barford St Michael

Exhibition information

My painting journey began in Oxfordshire where I cut my teeth on the local scenery with its often more muted colour palette. Yet the African part of me is regularly drawn back to the raw, more challenging colours and mood of the African countryside. My challenge is to capture the harmony of colour and form in both local and African subjects, to both please and challenge the observer.  Where will I end up with my art? I have no idea, but I am enjoying the journey!

I have been painting landscapes, in oil, since 2009. At that point I joined the C21 Art Group, where I learned all that I know and do with my art. In 2018 I was invited to join the Oxford Art Society (OAS).
