Classically Inspired Contemporary Still Life:
A mixture of classically composed still-life paintings alongside a fresh & vibrant series of colourful contemporary compositions.
All painted in oil to support my studies at Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art.
While learning the traditional methods of classical painting at EAFA, I have been experimenting in my home studio with a more immediate & contemporary style.
Using modern ‘high chroma’ pigments and cropped compositions I have been exploring the beauty of shapes and the colour of light, shadows and reflections on everyday objects.
Paintings are available to purchase framed or unframed in ‘easy to take home’ sizes and limited-edition prints are also available.
This is my first Oxfordshire Artweeks and I am really thrilled to be exhibiting my paintings alongside Suzanne Abell’s beautiful sculptures in such a vibrant location ‘UPStairs' at Fitch & Fellows in Thame town centre.
I mostly paint in oil using traditional methods to support my studies and each one of my paintings is a learning experience. I love using traditional techniques to present contemporary themes; as well as experimenting with looser styles too.
Objects within a still life composition are more deeply observed than we manage in everyday life and I enjoy playing with the idea of ‘value’; finding and presenting beauty in the mundane or overlooked. Though pictorially realistic, I hope my paintings can be enjoyed on different levels. Subjects I choose to paint are often closely connected with ‘the everyday’ - my home and family or friends. They are usually composed with a particular theme in mind or an element of humour.
Studying at EAFA has been instrumental in my transition to full-time artist and continues to inform my work and nudge me technically to improve my own paintings. With practice, I hope to paint more concisely; and ultimately, create art that remains interesting and beautiful past the time of its time of creation. I am continuing to learn so much from each one of my paintings. I hope you enjoy them.
