Exhibition information

Tessellated origami is an intricate and harmonious art form where a single sheet of paper is carefully folded into ordered, flowing geometric patterns. These designs feature delicate, decorative, and unusual interlocking shapes, creating mesmerising textures that interact beautifully with light reflection.

Each piece begins with precise pre-creasing of a grid, followed by pleat-based folding, where mountain and valley folds combine to form complex geometrical structures. The resulting patterns have a unique three-dimensional effect, casting shifting shadows and adding depth to the design. The play of light across the surface makes the artwork feel alive, as if it moves with the viewer’s perspective.

Inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics, I incorporate colours such as gold, red, black, and blue. In my recent work, I have also begun designing my own paper, featuring motifs such as waves inspired by Hokusai and koi fish. These designs enhance the sense of movement—koi appear as if they are leaping from the water, while the waves take on a striking three-dimensional presence through the folds.

Each creation embodies patience, precision, and transformation—turning a flat sheet of paper into an elegant architectural form. Through my work, I seek to surprise and inspire, inviting viewers into the captivating world of folded beauty.

Artist information

I am a mother of three with a passion for creativity and craftsmanship. My journey into tessellated origami was unexpected but deeply fulfilling. For years, I dedicated myself to making gingerbread houses, delighting in the process of constructing intricate edible art. However, in October 2023, my oven broke, and I was unable to replace it until February 2024. During that time, I found myself unable to bake—especially during Christmas, a season when I would normally be immersed in festive creations. It was a frustrating period, as I longed for an outlet for my creativity.

Then, I stumbled upon tessellated origami on YouTube, and something clicked. The precision, the patience, and the transformation of a single sheet of paper into mesmerizing patterns fascinated me. I was drawn to the rhythmic process of folding, much like how I once carefully assembled my gingerbread houses. As I practiced, I realized that my love for creation was not limited to baking—it was about the joy of making something intricate, unexpected, and beautiful.

Origami, like baking, is about structure, patience, and surprise. Whether it’s the delicate symmetry of tessellations or the way light plays on folded surfaces, I find immense satisfaction in crafting designs that intrigue and inspire. My work is deeply connected to my love for Japanese aesthetics, precision, and tradition, yet it also carries a sense of playfulness and discovery. I love creating something new—something that brings wonder and joy to those who see it.

Now, as I showcase my work at Oxfordshire Artweeks, I am excited to share not only my art but also the deep connection between Japanese folding culture and creativity. I look forward to sharing mine with you.
